Our world is designed to keep people sitting down.
When we drive, we sit.
When we watch TV, we sit.
When we go and watch high level sportspeople run themselves to exhaustion for our entertainment, we sit (and possibly have fatty foods and alcohol).
Even when we work at an office, we sit.
The unfortunate, but real reality of working in an office is that you spend a large portion of your day sitting at your desk staring at a screen (or sometimes two or even three screens) typing away.
There have been prolonged periods of my career where I have been sitting down working for up to 16 hours a day working and wondered why I’d have serious back pain, neck pain and general lethargy (which translates to inefficient work!)
As it turns out sitting for long periods can be a very big problem!
Several recent studies have discovered, sitting for too long can be as dangerous to health as smoking.
Sitting is worse than smoking? WOW! Wait! How is that possible?
Well sitting for prolonged periods more than doubles your risk of diabetes and is linked with an increase in heart disease.
In fact, inactivity is the fourth biggest killer of adults, according to the World Health Organisation.
So what’s the solution? Easy. To try and stand and move more than you sit.
One is to just be aware of how much you are sitting. That way you can make a goal of reducing that number a little bit each week.
If you are at work, you could try walking around for a minute or three once every half an hour, or even try a stand-up desk.
A stand-up desk is what I have tried to help make myself aware of not sitting as much.
My very handy father has made me an adapted stand-up desk (see picture, and yes I can explain everything on it).
I’ve been using it for roughly a month now (with an anti fatigue mat) and like anything it takes a little bit to get used to, but I do already feel much better for it than sitting slumped in a chair for at least 8 hours a day.
Even if you don’t want to go directly to a stand up desk….try standing up and moving around every half hour while working.
Your body and mind will thank you and you will definitely enhance your Business Efficiency
