What if a small piece of rubber could change your life for the better?
This week has reminded me that this can happen.
I’m at Melbourne University all this week doing Back and Posture Screenings on behalf of Bupa. It’s a service I have done a zillion times over the past fifteen years, and this week I’m reminded of the value of this service, and the magic band!
As shown in the picture I bring lots of different types of band / tubing and very often exercises involving these are part of my recommendation to the participants, especially those with the tricky combo of a sitting job and small kids!
Why? Because sedentary work isn’t good for us, and a bright shiny band like this reminds us to get up and activate the shoulder blade muscles that we often neglect.
Ironically, our nomadic ancestors used the shoulder blade muscles all the time – the anti – slouch muscles! Mind you, they faced many more hazards than we do. Wild beasts, disease, lack of food and nasty tribes in the next valley made their lives more tough than we will ever know. But… on the flip side, their posture and core strength would have likely been just fab!
So you have two choices, live a wild nomadic lifestyle or break up your day with regular use of a resistance band.
The beauty for me is that I get to demo the exercises all day this week and by the afternoon of day 2 I can already feel the benefit. It’s like being a nomadic tribesman again without a horrible death by the age of 40.
